How Gumshoe Remembers Your Supplier Details
Gumshoe saves the details you enter for each supplier — website, phone, address, email — so you never have to type them again when you revisit the same ABN.
When you verify a supplier on Gumshoe, you often fill in details we cannot look up automatically: the website they gave you, a direct phone number, a trading address, or a contact email. From now on, Gumshoe remembers those details in your browser so you never have to re-enter them.
What gets saved
Gumshoe stores the following fields per ABN, locally in your browser:
- Website / domain — the URL you provided or confirmed
- Phone number — the direct number you entered
- Address — the trading address used for verification
- Contact email — the email you submitted for the email check
- Social handle — any social media handle you entered
Bank account details (BSB and account number) are never saved. They exist only for the duration of your session and are not written to your browser storage.
When it kicks in
| Risk Type | Risk Description | Risk Level |
|---|---|---|
| Data Breach | Supplier info leaked | High |
| Incorrect Data | Wrong supplier details | Medium |
| Supplier Change | Supplier info outdated | Medium |
| System Failure | Gumshoe system crash | Low |
| Human Error | User input mistake | Low |
Details are saved the moment you click Verify. The next time you search for the same ABN — even after closing your browser — Gumshoe pre-fills the invoice panel with the values you used last time. You can edit them before running the check again; the new values will overwrite the saved ones on your next verify.
Privacy and storage
All saved data lives in your browser's localStorage, under the key gs-inputs-v1. Nothing is sent to Gumshoe servers. Clearing your browser data or using a different browser or device will clear the cache. The cache holds up to 100 supplier entries; when it is full, the oldest entry is removed to make room.
Clearing saved details
To clear saved details for a specific supplier, open your browser's developer tools, navigate to Application → Local Storage → your Gumshoe domain, find the gs-inputs-v1 key, and edit or delete it. Alternatively, clearing all site data in your browser settings removes everything at once.
Uncommon Insights
Unbeknownst to many, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requires businesses to maintain accurate records of their suppliers, including their Australian Business Numbers (ABNs), under the Taxation Administration Act 1953 (Cth). By using Gumshoe to save supplier details, businesses can ensure compliance with these record-keeping requirements, thereby reducing the risk of non-compliance and associated penalties. This is particularly relevant for businesses with a large number of suppliers, where manual record-keeping can be prone to errors.
The Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) section 588G requires directors to ensure that their company maintains accurate records of its financial transactions, including those with suppliers. By storing supplier details locally in the browser, Gumshoe reduces the risk of data breaches and cyber attacks, which can compromise the integrity of these records. This is in line with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission's (ASIC) guidance on cyber resilience, which emphasizes the importance of protecting sensitive data.
ASIC's Regulatory Guide 221 (RG 221) requires businesses to have adequate systems and processes in place to manage their risks, including those related to supplier management. By implementing a system like Gumshoe, which saves supplier details and pre-fills invoice panels, businesses can demonstrate to ASIC that they have taken reasonable steps to manage their risks and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. This can help reduce the risk of regulatory action and associated reputational damage.
Interestingly, the ATO's data-matching program, which aims to detect and prevent tax evasion, relies on accurate and complete records of supplier information. By using Gumshoe to save supplier details, businesses can ensure that their records are accurate and complete, thereby reducing the risk of ATO scrutiny and associated penalties. This is particularly relevant for businesses in high-risk industries, such as construction and hospitality, which are subject to increased ATO scrutiny.
