Understanding the NDIS Data Research Portal

How to use the NDIS data research portal at dataresearch.ndis.gov.au to understand provider market concentration, service district data, and what the aggregate datasets mean for supplier due diligence.

The NDIS publishes a range of datasets at dataresearch.ndis.gov.au/explore-data. This guide explains what each dataset contains and how to interpret it for supplier verification and procurement research purposes.

What data is available

The NDIS data research portal contains aggregate statistical datasets, not a per-provider register. The key datasets include:

  • Provider counts by state/service district — how many registered providers operate in each geographic area and support category. As of March 2026, there are 10,451 registered providers nationally.
  • Market concentration data — the percentage of NDIS payments going to the top 10 largest providers in each service district and support class. This reveals whether a service district is dominated by a few large providers or spread across many smaller ones.
  • Participant and plan data — aggregate data on plan values, committed supports, and participant demographics.

What the market concentration data tells you

The market concentration dataset measures the share of total NDIS payments made to the 10 largest providers in a given area. A high concentration percentage (e.g., top 10 providers receive 80%+ of payments in a district) indicates a less competitive market. A low percentage indicates many providers competing for participants.

This is useful context when evaluating an NDIS provider supplier — if they claim to be a major provider in a service district, the concentration data can provide context about how competitive that market is.

The data uses a 6-month measurement window with a 3-month lag. For example, data marked 31 March 2026 reflects payments for supports provided between 1 October 2025 and 31 March 2026.

How to verify an NDIS provider

To verify whether a specific supplier is a registered NDIS provider, the most reliable method is:

  1. Search the NDIS Find a Registered Provider tool directly
  2. Ask the supplier to provide their NDIS registration number (begins with 40xxxxxxxxx)
  3. Cross-reference their ABN on the NDIS provider portal
  4. Check their registration groups — NDIS providers are registered for specific support categories, not all categories

Gumshoe's NDIS verification check queries our registered provider database and will flag whether an entity's ABN appears in the NDIS register, along with their registration status and support categories.

Key terms

  • Service District — a geographic boundary used by the NDIA, encompassing multiple Local Government Areas based on ABS 2011 LGA boundaries
  • Annualised committed supports — plan value expressed as an annual equivalent, so plans shorter or longer than 12 months are pro-rated to a comparable 12-month value
  • Support Class — the broad category of NDIS supports (Core, Capacity Building, Capital)
  • Market concentration % — share of total payments to the top 10 providers; higher % = more concentrated market
